Web forwarding can be used to point your domain name to another website hosted with us, or elsewhere. It is a free feature available through your LCN control panel on all un-hosted domains. If you do have a web hosting package but would still like to direct your name to another website, it's still possible and details of how to do this are included in our guide below.

Setting up Web forwarding on a Domain without Web Hosting

If you just have the domain with us and not web hosting, you can set up web forwarding through your LCN control panel.

  1. Select Domains from the Dashboard in your LCN account.
  2. Click Manage next to the required domain name.
  3. Click Web Fowarding in the left hand menu.
  4. Add the Destination address.
  5. You can now choose which type of forwarding you wish to use.

    • Masked: This method uses frames to keep your domain name in a visitor's address bar. You can add your own page title and meta tags to the frameset HTML with masked forwarding.
    • Re-direct (301): This will re-direct users to the destination address. The destination address will be displayed in a visitor's address bar. Search engines will look at this as a permanent move.
    • Re-direct (302): This will re-direct users to the destination address. The destination address will be displayed in a visitor's address bar. Search engines will look at this as a temporary move.

Once you have added the destination address and chosen the type of forwarding you wish to use, click the Add Web Forwarding option and allow up to 15 minutes for this to set.

    Please Note:

In order for this web forwarding to work, you will need to ensure that your A records are pointing to our Web forwarding IP Address. To check this:

    1. Select Domains from the Dashboard in your LCN account.
    2. Click Manage next to the required domain name.
    3. Choose DNS Settings from the menu in the top left corner.
    4. Under the 'A' Records header, you need to ensure both www. & the (@) record point to 94.126.40.154. If they don't, simply select edit, remove the current IP address and add in 94.126.40.154.
    5. If set correctly, your A records should look like this:

    Here is a quick demonstration

Setting up Web forwarding on a Domain with Web hosting

If you have web hosting on your domain, you can still direct your name to another web address, but you will need to upload a script to your hosting package as the web forwarding option is not available.
The script you need to upload is called a meta refresh script and as scary as it sounds, it's simple to implement.

  1. You will need to create a blank index page using a program such as Notepad and insert the script. Open Notepad and then copy and paste the following code in to it:
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url=http://www.yourdomain.com">
  2. You will then need to edit http://www.yourdomain.com and add the destination address you wish to point towards.
  3. Save this file as index.html as this will allow the servers to read the web forwarding script.
  4. In our example below, we have set a meta refresh script to redirect visitors from our website to the main LCN website .
Note: Our example meta refresh script is available to download in the Related Downloads section on the right side of this page.
  5. You now need to upload this file to your web hosting package. If you have not done this before, please follow our How to upload files to your website with FTP guide.
  6. Once this is visible on your hosting, it can take up to 15 minutes for it to set.
