History of LCN – the short version

Believe it or not we didn’t start out as web hosting and domain name gurus – back in 1999 our bag was web design.

One of the things that really bothered us in those days was the lack of quality hosting and domain name providers around to house our clients’ websites. Tired of expensive domain prices and servers with flaky uptime, we decided the best way to fix the problem was to do it ourselves, so LCN.com was born!

Since then we’ve gone from strength to strength and are proud to be one of the largest web hosts and registrars in the UK. In fact, many of the small team from the beginning are still here, all these years later.

Our mission

Helping small businesses get online is at the heart of everything we do here at LCN. Our goal is to cut the jargon and make creating and publishing a website a realistic prospect for everyone. We don’t think you should have to rely on a third-party designer just to have an online presence.

But getting your site online is only half the battle – the other challenge is making it a success! We give you a hand with this too, with hundreds of resources to help you reach the right audience including guides on SEO, Facebook for businesses, and Twitter Marketing – all thrown in for free.

We made a conscious effort to make sure our entire operation is located at a single site. Sure we could’ve cut costs by using buying cheap server space in other data centres or outsourcing our support desk, but we think having our staff and services located in the same building in the UK makes a huge difference to us and our customers. It’s one big happy home for LCN’s staff and servers alike.

At the heart of the LCN platform is our state-of-the-art data centre just off the A1(M) in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. It’s super resilient, with its own substation, advanced UPS system and backup generator – meaning your server could stay online days even without mains electricity on-site. It’s also watched round-the-clock by our on-site monitoring team, who can step in at a moment’s notice if anything goes awry.

Data centre talk can get a bit jargony and drawn out, so here are some bitesize facts you might want to know.

Network and connectivity

Our servers and systems are supported by an amazing dark fibre core network. It sports super low latency for lightning-fast load times, oodles of bandwidth and, just like our data centre, has lots of resilience built in.

Security

Everyone these days knows security is important. That goes for physical as well as electronic protection, so we’ve got all-areas CCTV, top-notch alarms and in-house information security experts keeping a watchful eye on everything 24/7.

Environment monitoring

Our Network Operations Centre is full of clever engineering types who keep a lookout over every aspect of the data centre, like power levels, temperature, humidity, smoke detection, water leaks… you name it, they look for it.

Fire suppression

We use cutting edge detection technology to keep fire risks down to an absolute minimum. The VESDA system can detect even the tiniest amounts of smoke in the air, and our safe-to-breathe FM200 gas suppression system puts out fires in seconds – without damaging equipment.
