How to upload files to your website with FTP

This guide will show you how to upload your website files using FTP, for customers using LCN Web hosting, WordPress hosting.

Before you start, you’ll need to know your FTP login details, you can find these from your LCN Account under your hosting details. 

Please Note: Your FTP username and password may also be connected to a mailbox, be aware that changing the password will change the password for the mailbox user.

Let’s get started… 

WinSCP (PC) 

  1. Download, install and then run the WinSCP FTP program. 

Please note: When installing any piece of software, read the installation instructions carefully. Some software comes bundled with freeware you don’t need.

  1. In the Login box, enter upload.lcn.com in the Host name field. 
  1. Change the Port number to 21

Please note: This will change the File protocol to FTP

  1. In the User name field enter your FTP username
  1. In the Password field enter your FTP password


  1. Click Login
  1. There are two panels in the centre of WinSCP, the left-hand panel represents the files on your computer, the right-hand panel represents the files on your web hosting. To upload a file or folder select it in the left-hand panel and drag it over to the right-hand panel. If you want these files to be accessible over the internet, make sure you drag them into the web folder. 

That’s it! You’ve uploaded your website files. 

Please note: You may need to clear your web browser’s cache before you can see these pages online. You can learn how to do this here

FileZilla (PC) 

  1. Download, install and then run the FileZilla FTP program 

Please note: When installing any piece of software, read the installation instructions carefully. Some software comes bundled with freeware you don’t need. 

  1. In the Quickconnect bar at the top, enter upload.lcn.com in the Host field. 
  1. In the Username field enter your FTP username
  1. In the Password field enter your FTP password

  1. You can leave the Port field blank, it will default to 21
  1. Click Quickconnect
  1. In the Remote Site field on the right, enter the www.domain.com folder (replacing domain.com with your domain) then enter the web folder. This will put you in the right location on our server to start uploading your website files. 

  1. There are two panels in the centre of FileZilla, the left-hand panel represents the files on your computer, the right-hand panel represents the files on our server. To upload a file or folder select it in the left-hand panel and drag it over to the right-hand panel. 

Filezilla (Mac) 

  1. Download, install and then run the Filezilla FTP program. 

Please note: When installing any piece of software, read the installation instructions carefully. Some software comes bundled with freeware you don’t need. 

  1. In the Quickconnect bar at the top, enter upload.lcn.com in the Host field. 
  1. In the Username field enter your FTP username. 
  1. In the Password field enter your FTP password. 
  1. You can leave the Port field blank; it will default to 21
  1. In the Remote Site field on the right, enter the /www.yourdomain.com/web folder (replacing domain.com with your domain) then enter the web folder. This will put you in the right location on our server to start uploading your website files. 

  1. There are two panels in the centre of FileZilla, the left-hand panel represents the files on your computer, the right-hand panel represents the files on your web hosting. To upload a file or folder, simply drag and drop them into this window. 

That’s it! You’ve uploaded your website files. 

Please note: You may need to clear your web browser’s cache before you can see these pages online. You can learn how to do this here 

Other things to note 

  • The filename of your website’s homepage needs to be index.html or index.php as our web hosting is set up to detect this as the first page. If there isn’t an index file our default holding page will be displayed when you visit your website. Please ensure index.html or index.php are typed in lower case to avoid any errors. 
  • If you have problems connecting please check that your firewall, anti-virus or ISP (Internet Service Provider) aren’t blocking port 21 or the FTP program.
