A backup of your website and storing those backups is an essential process for website owners. Whether it\u2019s a small personal site or a worldwide corporate site, backups are often overlooked, but they\u2019re super important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This guide shows LCN\u202fWeb hosting<\/a>\u202fand\u202fWordPress hosting<\/a>\u202fcustomers how to create a website and database backup.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you start, you\u2019ll need to know your FTP login details. You can check and update these from your LCN account<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Backup your website content <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To backup of your website, an FTP client will be needed. We would recommend using\u202fWinSCP<\/a>\u202for\u202fFileZilla<\/a>\u202fas your FTP client, but feel free to use any FTP software you\u2019re comfortable with.  
 
Alternatively, if you have Backups activated you can use our Backup tool<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following steps will guide you using WinSCP.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Download<\/a>, install and then run the WinSCP FTP program. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    \n

    Please note<\/strong>: When installing any piece of software, read the installation instructions carefully. Some software comes bundled with freeware you don\u2019t need. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    1. In the\u202fLogin<\/strong>\u202fbox, enter\u202fupload.lcn.com<\/strong>\u202fin the\u202fHost name<\/strong>\u202ffield. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      1. Change the Port number to\u202f21<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
        \n

        Please note<\/strong>: This will change the File protocol to FTP <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        1. In the\u202fUser name<\/strong>\u202ffield enter your FTP username. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          1. In the\u202fPassword<\/strong>\u202ffield enter your FTP password. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
            1. Click\u202fLogin<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
              1. There are two panels in the centre of WinSCP, the left-hand panel represents the files on your computer, the right-hand panel represents the files on your web hosting. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                1. To backup your files, select all of the content in the right-hand panel and drag it over to the left-hand panel. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                  Please note<\/strong>: for ease of use, it is recommended to create a new folder on the your local machine for your website to be stored in. This folder can then be copied to CD, USB, DVD or an external hard drive for safe keeping. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

                  Backing up your database <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

                  If you built your website with an application such as\u202fJoomla<\/strong>\u202for\u202fWordPress<\/strong>, then your website is linked to a database. Databases need to be backed up separately as they are not stored in the same location as the website files.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  1. First, the database\u202fusername, password<\/strong>\u202fand\u202fhostname<\/strong>\u202fare needed. If you are unsure of these, connect via FTP or use File Manager and locate your websites\u202fconfiguration<\/strong>\u202ffile.  <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                    • For\u202fWordPress<\/strong>, these can be found in the\u202fwp-config.php<\/strong>\u202ffile <\/li>
                    • In\u202fJoomla<\/strong>, these can be found in the\u202fconfiguration.php<\/strong>\u202ffile <\/li>
                    • and OpenCart<\/strong>, these can be found in the\u202fconfig.php<\/strong>\u202ffile  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                      Make a note of these details, they will be needed later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      1. Navigate to www.domain.com\/mysqladmin. Replacing \u201cdomain.com\u201d with your domain name.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                        1. Login using the database\u202fUsername, Password<\/strong>\u202fand\u202fhostname<\/strong>\u202fgained earlier. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                          1. Select Databases and choose your database e.g. domain_com_db <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                            1. Click\u202fExport<\/strong>\u202fand click\u202fGo<\/strong>. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                              1. You\u2019ll be ask to\u202fdownload<\/strong>\u202fthe file and\u202fsave<\/strong>\u202fit to a location on your machine. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
