This will allow you to free up space in your mailbox without permanently deleting your messages.<\/p>\n<p>This guide will explain how to create a local folder within Mac Mail and archive messages from your IMAP mailbox to local storage on your Mac.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding a local folder for archiving mail<\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t already have a local folder for archiving mail you can create one by following these steps:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"step_by_step\">\n<li>Got to the <strong>Mailbox<\/strong> menu.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>New Mailbox<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the <strong>Location<\/strong> for the new mailbox is set to <strong>On My Mac<\/strong> and enter a <strong>Name<\/strong> for the mailbox.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>OK<\/strong> to create the mailbox. You should now see this has been added to the folders list in Mac Mail under the heading <strong>On My Mac<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Archiving Mail to the local folder<\/h3>\n<p>To archive messages from your IMAP mailbox you simply need to drag\/drop the message from the IMAP folders to the location folder added in Mac Mail.<\/p>\n<p>You can move messages individually or in bulk. If you\u2019re copying messages in bulk try to limit copy operations to a few hundred emails at a time to avoid any risk of the copy operation timing out mid-transfer.<\/p>\n<p>You can select the entire contents of a folder by using CMD+A or using the edit menu and select all.<\/p>\n<p><video width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" controls loop autoplay muted><source src=\"\/support\/articles\/attachment\/879\/inline\/original\/1569483879\/Mac_mail_local_archive.mp4\">Your browser does not support the video tag.<\/video><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it!
