You can change your root password on your Ubuntu server via SSH with some simple commands whenever you need to by completing the following steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, access the server via the SSH interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you are logged in as the root user, then you only need to type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sudo passwd root<\/pre>\n\n\n\n

As shown in the example below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
root@UbuntuServer:~# sudo passwd root\nNew password:\nRetype new password:\npasswd: password updated successfully\nroot@UbuntuServer:~#<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n

Step 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
If you are logged in as a user that already has root permissions, then you will not<\/strong> need to type ‘sudo<\/strong>‘.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can also set the ‘root’ to be a different user if you have multiple users set up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this case, you can type ‘passwd<\/strong>‘ alone and it will change the password for the current user. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s an example of a use with root privileges changing their own password with the shorter command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
