Guide to setting file permissions

This guide will show you step-by-step how to set file permissions needed for certain scripts to run.

To start with you will need some FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software, you can download Leech FTP by clicking HERE or find other FTP software here , most FTP software is free.

Once you have installed the software on your machine open the program and go to connect. You will be asked to enter some information that is needed for your computer to connect to the server

Please note: Due to the amount of FTP software available names for some of the settings and the way in which the software works may vary.
The following example uses Leech FTP software:

  1. Open Leech FTP and connect to your hosting space. Select the file you wish to change the permissions on and right click on it. From the contextual menu choose the Set Attributes option.

  2. A pop-up window will now appear with three headings; Owner, Group and Public. Each heading has three check boxes under it representing the permissions each has. To run cgi scripts the files permissions must be set to 755 i.e. Owner has full permissions, Group has Read and Execute permissions and Public also has Read and Execute permissions.

Please note: on the NT servers you do not need to set permissions as they are set automatically.
