What is FrontPage?
FrontPage is a website creation and management tool developed by Microsoft. FrontPage tries to allow basic users to create more advanced features for their website without having to know what is going on in the background. Most of these features require special extensions to be installed on the server for them to work. If you use any of the FrontPage built in features they will require the server extensions to be enabled. Features like themes, hit counters, banner ads, rollover buttons, form to email etc.
Please note if you have used any of the FrontPage built in features your website will not work correctly if the extensions are disabled. The use of FrontPage and FTP is discouraged. This is due to the way that FrontPage sets the owner permissions for files, which can lead to conflicts and corruption of the extensions if FrontPage is used in conjunction with FTP.
FrontPage is most commonly used because it is bundled with other software packages most notably Microsoft Office and because it is a Microsoft product. For the entry level or basic developer it is relatively simple to use. However the fact that it relies heavily on special extensions being installed and its non-standard implementation of most of its features make it inadequate for the more advanced developer.
