What is a domain name?

A domain name is your address on the Internet, e.g. www.domainname.com. It is just like a postal address, it tells other computers on the system where you are. But instead of giving the house number, street, town and so on, it explains which computer you are connected to and how you are connected to it.

A domain name can be used as the basis of an E-Mail Address, a Web Site Address, or both. E-Mail Addresses always have the '@' symbol in them, and web site addresses usually contain 'www'.
