<faq>
    <answer>
Unfortunately once the name has been registered LCN are liable for the registry fees. Changing the spelling of a domain is exactly the same as registering a new one. When you register a domain you are reserving the right to exclusively use that unique character string, changing it would mean reserving the rights to another unique character string, the same as registering a new name.

Because the name has been reserved by the registry in good faith i.e. the registry reserved what it was told to, they are under no obligation to refund the administration fees as they have carried out their service without fault. This means that LCN are unable to cancel or offer refunds on misspelled or unwanted domains.

If you purchased web hosting on a misspelled domain then we can swap the hosting onto a new or existing domain of your choice.

The best thing to do with misspelled domains is use the free forwarding facility and point it at the correct version thus ensuring if anyone else makes the same mistake when visiting the site they can still find you.
</answer>

    <answer>
When you register your domain name through LCN you are given the chance to change the details for who the domain will be registered to before you proceed and make payment. Once a domain name has been registered and entered into the relevant registries the TLD (Top Level Domain) you have purchased e.g. .uk, .com etc. will dictate the procedure for modifying the registered owner information.

.UK Domain Names

Nominet maintain the details of all .uk domain names on a central database. Nominet are the official registry for .uk internet names, just like the DVLA is for vehicle registration.

If there is a spelling mistake in the registered owner details then you can use the details supplied by Nominet in their sign-up email, to correct the mistake.

If you no longer require your domain name you may wish to transfer it to another user instead of surrendering it.

In order to modify the owner details for your domain name you would need to contact the governing body, Nominet. There currently is a charge of £30(+VAT) to make this change which can be completed online via their website.

Please note that Nominet reserves the right not to transfer a domain name if it considers that the correct authority has not been obtained from the current registrant. In this case no fees paid will be refunded.

Generic Top Level Domains (gTLD - .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, .EU)

To modify the registered owner name stored in the main registry database for gTLDs will incurr a £20.00 + VAT registry administration charge per domain name. You can make this change via My Account, simply log-in, click on the domain you wish to change and then select the "Change Registered Owner" option under the "Manage Domain" menu.

If you just wish to change the contact details relating to a gTLD registration and not the Registered Owner, then you can do this with no charge by using the "Modify Owner Details" option from the "Manage Domain" menu
</answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
The term "scripting language" is used to describe a high-level programming language with relatively transparent syntax i.e. human readable. Most computer users view programming as something which is difficult. For this reason languages such as Perl, PHP and VBScript (ASP) are referred to and marketed as scripting languages to avoid the dreaded "p" word.

In computer programming, a script is a program or sequence of instructions that is interpreted or carried out by another program rather than by the computer processor (like a compiled program is).

Some languages have been conceived expressly as script languages. Among the most popular are Perl, PHP and VBScript. In the context of the World Wide Web, Perl, PHP, VBScript and similar script languages are often written to handle forms input or other services for a Web site and are processed on the Web server. Unlike a JavaScript script in a Web page which runs "client-side" on the Web browser not on the server.

In general, script languages are easier and faster to code in than the more structured and compiled languages such as C and C++. However, a script takes longer to run than a compiled program since each instruction is being handled by another program first (requiring additional instructions) rather than directly by the basic instruction processor.

The most common use of scripting is for user feedback e.g. a feedback form on a web page which the user fills out and submits. The results are parsed through a script and sent to the owner of the website. Almost all web pages which generate content dynamically or 'on-the-fly' will be using some kind of server side scripting.

Please note writing scripts can be a complex and time consuming process. No support can be offered for building your scripts.
</answer>

Instead of being deleted and returned to the pool of available names it is held for a 30 day grace period.

During this 30 day window the original registrant may still retrieve the domain name for an additional fee. <answer>
There is no simple answer to this question. All of the major search engines such as google, yahoo, msn, ask jeeves etc, use programs called robots or spiders to analyse a web site and give it a relevancy score. This score decides where a site will appear in that particular search engines listings.

To get your page spidered you will need to submit your web address to the individual search engines via their submit pages. However this alone will not necessarily get your site onto the search engine.

As you can appreciate the Internet is global and chances are that someone somewhere has a site almost identical to yours. This means that the spiders give points depending on the information embedded in the HTML of a web page, most specifically the information contained within the META tags.
</answer>

This means that if you register a domain and then search for it straight away it may appear to be available. </answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
You may already have a website if so the web redirection allows you to 'forward' or 'point' to your domain to a particular site hosted elsewhere on the Internet - e.g. on freespace allocated by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Example:

http://www.yourdomainname.com

forwards to: http://freespace.virgin.net/your_user_name/index.html

You can choose wether to mask the forwarding or not. URL masking keeps your domain name in the browser address bar by holding the underlying web address you are forwarding to in a HTML frameset. Turning the masking off sets the forwarding to do a HTTP 302 re-direct and the forwarding address will appear in the browser address bar.

Please allow up to 1 hour for the web forwarding to become active. Newly registered domain names please allow up to 24 hours.
</answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
The web forwarding offered by LCN is URL based it is the same as having a hyperlink or meta refresh on your home page. The masked forwarding holds the site you are forwarding to in a HTML frameset.

You can forward to an IP address but do not get this confused with having record in the DNS for your domain that resolves www.yourdomain.com to that IP address. The domain is parked on our nameservers and a program generates the masked framset on-the-fly. This means if you have a web server listening on your IP address the HTTP Host will not be your domain it will be one of our forwarding servers.

If you wish to have a DNS record (such as an A or MX record) set-up for your domain to point to an IP address or host name you will need to either have one of our UN hosting packages or just the domain registration with us.

To set this up you would need to either phone or e-mail our support team confirming your username and password and provide the details you wish to be set-up.

We can not offer DNS customisation with our NT hosting packages
</answer>

    <answer>
The most common reason for not receiving emails forwarded through your domain is due to the forwarding address being a web based email (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo), and the junk mail filters used to prevent spam/bulk email from cluttering up your inbox.

If you believe emails are not getting forwarded from your domain name then please try checking the junk mail folder on the forwarding address. If the forwarded emails are ending up in your junk mail folder it may be necessary to adjust your junk mail filter so that in future it will recognise any email forwarded from your domain name.

Please note it will take upto 1hr for your forwarding to become active once you have configured it. For new registrations it can take upto 24hrs.
</answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
Your domain will not automatically appear in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves etc. without being submitted for categorisation/addition to each search engines listings. You should not attempt to do this before you have a website under your domain. The search engines run programs called spiders which come along to your website and crawl over every page. The spiders aim is to give your site a relevancy score in relation to its content and/or categorise it. If you do not have any pages for the spider to look at then you will not get a very good score. Because of this LCN do not operate automatic search engine submission.

Promoting Your Site</P

There are many techniques to optimise your web pages for the search engines. A good starting point is the page title and meta tags. http://www.search.com/guides/submit/index.html is just one site which provides information about how to construct meta tags to aid your search engine positioning.

Unfortunately meta tags are not a guarantee to get your site listed highly or even at all. Various search engines employ different ways of positioning you higher in the list, these range from your meta tags but can also include how many external links your site has, how much traffic your site is generating etc. And they keep their ranking algorithms very secret so that they are not abused.

The only sure fire way to make sure that someone sees your domain listed when they search it is to pay for a listing under different keywords. For example a sponsored link so that when someone types a key word into a search engine then your site would be near the top if not at the top. Unfortunately we are unable to go into more detail than this as this faq would become a thesis as there is so much information on the web.
</answer>

    <answer>You have two options for using your domain name as an e-mail address. These are:

Set up dedicated hosting for your domain name.

To use your domain name for email fully you will need to HOST the domain name on a server. This will give you an allocated amount of disk space for each mail account.

OR

Set up email forwarding on your domain name.

This option allows you to keep your current email account if you are not quite ready to utilise the extra features that a hosted email account provides you with. To set up your email forwarding use the My Account section on our site. <answer>
The terms Bandwidth and Data Transfer are frequently used interchangeably which can be misleading. Bandwidth refers to the total amount of data that can theoretically be transferred at any one time. Data Transfer refers to the amount of data that has actually been sent from the server to the client or vice versa. An analogy would be a road, the number of lanes on a road would represent Bandwidth, the number of cars that travel along that road over a given period of time would represent Data Transfer.

Everytime a user opens a page of your website the data is transferred from the server to the user i.e. the users web browser. Typically, a page with a few graphics (GIFs or JPEGs) will probably require the transfer of about 50KB of data to your browser.
</answer>

    <answer>
This is a fraudulent domain name renewal notice. DO NOT respond to this notice.

Letters are currently being distributed making false claims to encourage uses to reply submitting payment details for bogus renewals. The letters are being distributed by The Domain Registry of America, Domain Registry of Europe and EU Registry Services The letters are headed "DOMAIN EXPIRATION NOTICE" claiming that your domain name/s are at risk if they are not renewed immediately.

These letters are actually offers to transfer your domain name to another registrar. If you take up the offer you will be changing your contract, may lose any free services currently provided and may face higher renewal fees.

If you receive one of these letters or have any questions regarding your renewal dates please investigate before making any payment.

To investigate the renewal date/s of your domain name simply type the domain name into the search area in the top right. <answer>
Over recent years unsolicited email has become an increasing problem that is proving difficult to resolve due to the nature of the protocols that carry out the transfer of email. When Post Office Protocol (POP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) were devised the concept of spam did not exist, therefore the protocols made no provisions to deal with it.

There have been many attempts to eradicate spam with varying degrees of success, however the spammers work equally hard at finding work-a-rounds for any blocking or filtering techniques. A more aggressive stance taken by some ISPs and system administrators is to blacklist certain mailservers and/or IP ranges by refusing to accept or deliver mail from them. This unfortunately can sometimes affect legitimate users.

A lot of spam is sent from compromised machines, scripts or through open relay mailservers which do not necessarily have anything to do with the spamers. Trying to track down the true originator/sender of the spam proves impossible in most cases or a futile exercise, even if you do manage to get them blacklisted they just move on to a different server and start again.

Recently there have been some attempts in the US and Europe to legislate against the sending of unsolicited/spam email, but due to the global nature of the Internet unless every country participates its effectiveness will be minimal.

The following steps can help to reduce the number of spam emails you receive:

Choose carefully who you give your email address to i.e. do you think the company or website you are giving your address to is reputable?
Is your email address publicly available? e.g. email link on your website. If so does it need to be? could it become a feedback form instead?
Make sure your Anti Virus protection is always kept up-to-date
Make your email address a specific alias rather than a catchall which gets anything sent to your domain.
Try installing some spam filtering software such as SpamPal (Windows) Spam Assassin (Linux)

</answer>

    <answer>
Email forwarding allows you to continue to use an existing email account - for example an e-mail account provided by your ISP e.g yourname@btinternet.com.

Any email messages that are sent to your 'new' address (e.g. anything@yourdomain.com), is automatically redirected to your existing address, just like traditional postal forwarding.

You can set-up 5 named forwarders (e.g. you@yourdomain.com) to forward to an existing email addresses (e.g. you@btinternet.com).
</answer>

    <answer>
Historically we have offered our domain registration customers the option of setting up a catchall email forwarder, this would forward any email sent to the domain onto the email address supplied by the customer.

This industry practise has been very much abused by spammers, who carry out what are known as "dictionary attacks" on domains, where they simply forward multitudes of junk mail addressed to random addresses within a domain which are then forwarded via the catch-all email forwarder to the email address on the users account.

We no longer offer a catchall email forwarder for the reasons outlined above. Our aim is to:

1. reduce the amount of spam and unwanted email received by our users
2. reduce any issues we may have forwarding legitimate email to other networks or ISP's

Customers with existing catchall forwarders will not be affected for the time being, however if the catchall is deleted it can not be re-created. New registrations or existing registrations without a catchall email forwarder will not be able to create one.
</answer>

    <answer>The path to PERL is '/usr/bin/perl'.

If you are using our old sytle NT hosting, it works differently so the above information is not relevant. Perl was originally developed to run on UNIX based systems and although it runs fine on NT, there are some changes that are needed. A good site to get information from is http://www.activestate.com. LCN is using the latest version of Active State Perl.

All Perl files need to have the extension .pl before they will run on the NT servers. <answer>
Visa and MasterCard have developed authenticated payment capabilities to improve online transaction security and to help encourage the growth of e-commerce. By creating a virtual signature in the form of a password chosen by you when you sign up, Visa and MasterCard hopes to move toward guaranteed payments for merchants and provide a safer online commerce experience for Cardholders.

Verified By Visa and MasterCard SecureCode enable two parties (card holder and card issuer) to authenticate each other by exchanging digital certificates (electronic identifications) before proceeding with an online transaction, assuring the Cardholder that he is dealing with a legitimate merchant and providing the merchant with proof of participation of the real Cardholder. This gives both parties the confidence to proceed and creates a digitally signed record of the transaction that can be verified afterwards.

For more details about the two schemes please refer to the following links:

MasterCard - http://www.mastercard.com/securecd/welcome.do
Verified by Visa - http://www.visaeurope.com/iusevisa/shoppingonline.html

Some card issuers are being pro-active about getting their customers to enroll in Verified By Visa or MasterCard SecureCode and give you the option to sign up when we send you to their authentication server during the payment process. Most card issuers should give you the option to sign up later and just proceed with the payment, if not you can go to your banks website and sign up, try using another card or call our support team on 0870 7440823.
</answer>

    <answer>
This issue arises on the UN hosting plans. It is normally one of two reasons:

The site has been uploaded into the users web directory rather than the root web directory. You can check this by going to www.yourdomain.com/~username where the username is your hosting one. You will need to make sure you set the initial remote directory to /web when you FTP your files.

Your home page is not called index.html. It has to be all lower case and .html not .htm as the server looks for .html before .htm and the holding page has a .html extension.

</answer>

    <answer>
Currently if you have a UN based hosting plan then you can get access to site statistics (stats or webstats). Site stats are ideal for analyzing your site traffic. Who visits your site, where do they come from, what is your most popular page, what time of the day, month year are users visiting? To understand what the statistics mean here's a brief description. To view your stats simply enter www.yourdomainname.com/stats in your browser, you will then be prompted for your web hosting username/password to gain access.

The yearly (index) report shows statistics for a 12 Month period, and links to each month. The monthly report has detailed statistics for that month with additional links to any URL's and referrers found. The various totals shown are explained below.

Hits
Any request made to the server which is logged, is considered a 'hit'. The requests can be for anything... html pages, graphic images, audio files, cgi scripts, etc... Each valid line in the server log is counted as a hit. This number represents the total number of requests that were made to the server during the specified report period. E.g. Accessing a page with 3 images on it will count as 4 hits (1 for the html page and 1 for each image).

Files
Some requests made to the server, require that the server then send something back to the requesting client, such as a html page or graphic image. When this happens, it is considered a 'file' and the files total is incremented. The relationship between 'hits' and 'files' can be thought of as 'incoming requests' and 'outgoing responses'.

Pages
Pages are, literally just pages. Generally, any HTML document, or anything that generates an HTML document, would be considered a page. This does not include graphic images, audio clips, etc... This number represents the number of 'pages' requested only, not images or anything else included in the document featured on the page.

Visits
Whenever a request is made to the server from a given IP address (site), the amount of time since a previous request by the address is calculated (if any). If the time difference is greater than a pre-configured 'visit timeout' value (or has never made a request before), it is considered a 'new visit', and this total is incremented (both for the site, and the IP address).

Sites
Each request made to the server comes from a unique 'site', which can be referenced by a name or ultimately, an IP address. The 'sites' number shows how many unique IP addresses made requests to the server during the reporting time period. This DOES NOT mean the number of unique individual users (real people) that visited, which is impossible to determine using just logs and the HTTP protocol (however, this number might be about as close as you will get).

KBytes
The KBytes (kilobytes) value shows the amount of data, in KB, which was sent out by the server during the specified reporting period. This value is generated directly from the log file, so it is up to the web server to produce accurate numbers in the logs. In general, this should be a fairly accurate representation of the amount of outgoing traffic the server had. (Note: A kilobyte is 1024 bytes, not 1000 bytes)

Top Entry and Exit Pages
The Top Entry and Exit Pages give rough estimates of what URL's are used to enter your site, and what the last pages viewed are. Because of limitations in the HTTP protocol, log rotations, etc... This number should be considered a good "rough guess" of the actual numbers, however will give a good indication of the overall trend in where users come into, and exit, your site.
</answer>

    <answer>As well as being used for communicating by e-mail, your domain is also the means by which people can locate your website on the World Wide Web. You may already have a webpage on some freespace provide by you ISP - in which case you would probably like to take advantage of our free web forwarding service, which will redirect requests to your existing web site.

Alternatively, you may need dedicated web hosting for a website that is about to be developed or that might already exist and needs more advanced features than those provided with freespace. In this case, our competitive web hosting plans will allow your website to utilise technologies such as PERL, PHP, MySQL and features such as web statistics and WebMail etc. on lower population servers than that of your ISP's freespace. </answer>

    <answer>
With regard to privacy and the whois database displaying owner information:

generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a technical coordination body for the Internet. Created in October 1998 by a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities. Specifically, ICANN coordinates the assignment of the following identifiers that must be globally unique for the Internet to function:

Internet domain names

IP address numbers

protocol parameter and port numbers

In addition, ICANN coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root server system.

ICANN requires that full WHOIS information is provided for each domain name that is registered. Information about who is responsible for domain names is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. The registrar will make this information available to the public on a "Whois" site.

For the "Public Access to Data on Registered Names" section of the Registrar Agreement as set out by ICANN Click here.

.UK Top Level Domain

All domain names registered or renewed, except where the registrant is a non-trading individual and has positively chosen to opt-out (i.e. by leaving the organisation field blank when registering), will have their address details displayed.

Non-trading individuals include those who do not use or plan to use their domain name for business, trade or professional transactions.

If an individual has chosen to opt-out the address field will not appear on the WHOIS, instead the enquirer will be directed towards their tag holder. In this case the WHOIS will read: "This individual has chosen to opt-out of the WHOIS. Contact via Agent".

Registrants who are business and non-trading individuals are classified as follows:

Businesses

A domain name registrant is identified as a business if:

The registrant name contains the word "ltd" "plc" or "limited"

Any of the following discrete words appear in the registrant name:

agency

agents

associates

association

business

college

commerce

company

consultancy

consultants

consulting

corp

corporation

council

enterprises

gmbh

holdings

inc

incorporated

institute

institution

partners

partnership

solicitors

Any of the following discrete words appear as the last word in the registrant name:

co

school

trust

university

Non-trading individuals

Non-trading individuals are registrants who are not using or intending to use their domain name in the course of a business, trade or profession.

The WHOIS includes address details for all domain names registered or renewed after 1 December 2002, unless the registrant is a non-trading individual and has positively chosen to opt-out (i.e. by leaving the organisation field blank when registering). The address details of these registrations will start to appear from the end of the month in which the domain name is registered or renewed.

It is anticipated that the WHOIS will contain address details for all registrations, except for those who have opted out, by 1 December 2004.

For more details please visit Nominet at www.nominet.org.uk </answer>

    <answer>The domains available include .com, .co.uk for commercial, .org, .org.uk for charity organisations, .net, .net.uk for Network Service Providers, .ltd.uk for limited companies, .plc.uk for PLC's, and .biz for business's. It doesn't really matter what domain you want to use and you are not restricted to by what type of organisation you are e.g. you do not have to be charity to use a .org domain, but generally it is better to use a domain that will relate to your organisation. </answer>

    <answer>
This problem is usually related to disk quota. If you can try removing some unnecessary files and attempt to upload a small file to determine if this is the problem. If the upload is successful then the issue is with the amount of disk space you have. You can either remove some unwanted files or upgrade to a hosting plan with more space by logging into the My Account.

If the upload still does not work please contact a member of the support team.
</answer>

    <answer>
MySQL is a database server that embodies an ingenious software architecture that maximises speed and customisability. Extensive re-use of code within the software has resulted in a database management system unmatched in speed, compactness and stability. For more information please visit the MySQL website.

As the demand for increased interactivity and real-time applications via the Web increases so does the need to be able to access detailed information quickly and effectively. Whether it is online shopping or checking train times chances are the information will be stored in a database and accessed through one of the many web based scripting technologies (e.g. Perl/ASP/PHP etc.). If you want to develop a dynamic website that is able to respond to user searches and queries then you will need a database to store that information.
</answer>

    <answer>Originally endings such as .CO.UK referred to UK registered companies, but more recently it just means some kind of UK entity whether it is a person, a company, and so on.

There are over 200 alternative endings available in total, and a variety of rules and regulations are applicable for registering a domain name in certain countries. If you find that the domain you want is not available with a .CO.UK ending, then try .COM and .NET - they don't necessarily imply that you are a US citizen or company, since they are often used to suggest an international or worldwide entity.</answer>

    <answer>
When you register a domain name it can still show as available for upto 24hrs. This is due to the length of time it takes for the WHOIS database to update and this is the database you query to check the availability of a domain name. Most of the registries are lowering the amount of time between updates of their WHOIS database, eventually the updates should take place in real-time.

Once you receive the confirmation e-mail for your registration the name has been registered. It is not possible for anyone else to register the name, despite the fact that it appears to be free.

If after 48hrs your name still is not listed in the WHOIS then you should contact us.
</answer>

    <answer>Nominet has a duty to contact the registrant of a DETAGGED domain name to confirm that they do not want to renew the domain name before it can be cancelled. This process can be time consuming, especially if the database holds poor quality contact information for the registrant. However, once the registrant has confirmed they no longer require the domain name, the registration will be suspended after 21 days and then cancelled between 6-8 weeks after that. </answer>

    <answer>A domain name is your address on the Internet, e.g. www.domainname.com. It is just like a postal address, it tells other computers on the system where you are. But instead of giving the house number, street, town and so on, it explains which computer you are connected to and how you are connected to it.

A domain name can be used as the basis of an E-Mail Address, a Web Site Address, or both. E-Mail Addresses always have the '@' symbol in them, and web site addresses usually contain 'www'. </answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
The most common cause of web pages not updating once you have uploaded new
files to your hosting space is caching. Caching is used widely across the
Internet to cut down the amount of time it takes to request information. It
works by keeping a temporary copy of information that has been requested
locally for a defined amount of time.

The most common forms of caching web pages occur with your web browser and
Internet Service Provider. Most web browsers cache pages when you
visit a web site so that the next time you go to that page it appears to
load faster, because it is using a local copy rather than requesting a new
copy be sent across the Internet. ISP caching works in much the same way
once you have visited a website your ISP may cache those pages so that they
appear to load faster the next time you visit them. The main problem with
this is that unlike your browser cache you can not delete these temporary
files, instead you have to wait until your ISPs cache expires and it
requests fresh copies of the files. This can be very frustrating if you are
trying to develop or make changes to your website. Unfortunately there is
very little that can be done except to change your ISP. Most ISPs do not
cache pages for more than half an hour or so but there are some that take
considerably longer.

You should first try to delete any temporary/cached files that your browser
may have. In IE6 go to Tools -> Internet Options, under "Temporary Internet
Files"click "Delete Files" and try re-visiting the web page.
If this does not work then your ISP is probably caching the pages you have
changed. If you have an alternative dial up connection with another ISP that
you have not used to visit your website, you will normally see the changes
you have made immediately.

</answer>

    <answer>
To cancel/remove your current hosting plan we would need a signed letter/fax from the owner of the account requesting this. To request this we would need to have the following details:

Request to cancel/remove hosting
Domain name(s) in question
Account User/Pass details
Address details
Signature and date

Once we have received these details we will then process your request within 24 hours.

Please note we can only refund any monies paid for hosting plans if the request to cancel is within the 30 day period as stated within our terms and conditions.
</answer>

    <answer>A Blog or 'Weblog' can be used for many things, usually to post commentary or news on a particular subject or as a personal online diary. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art, photographs, sketchblog, videos, music, and audio. </answer>

    <answer>
If you have an LCN.com hosting plan attached to a domain name you administer with us, you will have access to Hosting details and/or FTP details depending on the type of hosting you have with us.

**Please be aware that if you currently utilise a legacy hosting package such as an LCN.com NT or UN hosting, or a ex-Telivo Hosting package, you will have to make a support request either through our contact form, or by phone - to be provided with this information.
http://www.lcn.com/contact_us

Location of your FTP/Hosting information

This information is located in your LCN.com account after logging in.

Login Here

From accessing your LCN.com account, you should be provided with a list of current domains/services that you can manage from within that particular account. To find the FTP/hosting details relating to a specific domain, find the domain name in question (from the screen) and [click] on the relevant package name (this will be located just under the domain name).

Clicking on the package name, i.e. 'Dynamic Hosting', will bring up the Hosting summary screen. This page will contain all the relevant data relating to your Web Hosting (including any relevant FTP information).

If you use a sitebuilder hosting, you will simply be provided with an additional 'log in' button, to access the software.
</answer>

    <answer>
FrontPage is a website creation and management tool developed by Microsoft. FrontPage tries to allow basic users to create more advanced features for their website without having to know what is going on in the background. Most of these features require special extensions to be installed on the server for them to work. If you use any of the FrontPage built in features they will require the server extensions to be enabled. Features like themes, hit counters, banner ads, rollover buttons, form to email etc.

Please note if you have used any of the FrontPage built in features your website will not work correctly if the extensions are disabled. The use of FrontPage and FTP is discouraged. This is due to the way that FrontPage sets the owner permissions for files, which can lead to conflicts and corruption of the extensions if FrontPage is used in conjunction with FTP.

FrontPage is most commonly used because it is bundled with other software packages most notably Microsoft Office and because it is a Microsoft product. For the entry level or basic developer it is relatively simple to use. However the fact that it relies heavily on special extensions being installed and its non-standard implementation of most of its features make it inadequate for the more advanced developer.
</answer>

    <answer>
To make sure you always get great value for money we calculate the upgrade fee by
linking it to how much usage you will get before the end of you current contract.

Time for some maths:

c = d*((t-m)/t)

c = cost, d = difference in cost t = term of product (12 months), m = number of months elapsed

Example:

I am a customer looking to upgrade my 'starter hosting' to a 'dynamic hosting' package.
I ordered my hosting package 6 months ago, now I want a package with a Database and some scripting.

My total upgrade cost is worked out as follows:

The difference in cost between the packages (£20)

Multiplied by the number of months left on your contract (e.g. 6 months) divided by the term of your contract (e.g. 12 months)

So the upgrate cost would be:

£20 x ( 6 / 12 )

The final cost of my upgrade would be £10
</answer>

    <answer>
PHP is a script language and interpreter that is freely available and used primarily on Linux Web servers. PHP, originally derived from Personal Home Page Tools, now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, which the PHP FAQ describes as a "recursive acronym."

PHP is an alternative to Microsoft's Active Server Page (ASP) technology. As with ASP, the PHP script is embedded within a Web page along with its HTML. Before the page is sent to a user that has requested it, the Web server calls PHP to interpret and perform the operations called for in the PHP script.

An HTML page that includes a PHP script is typically given a file name suffix of ".php" ".php3," or ".phtml". Like ASP, PHP can be thought of as "dynamic HTML pages," since content will vary based on the results of interpreting the script.

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development as it can be embedded into HTML.

Visit www.php.net for more information.
</answer>

    <answer>
Perl is a script programming language that is similar in syntax to the C language and that includes a number of popular Unix facilities such as SED, awk, and tr. Perl is an interpreted language that can optionally be compiled just before execution into either C code or cross-platform bytecode.

Perl is regarded as a good choice for developing common gateway interface (CGI) programs because it has good text manipulation facilities (although it also handles binary files). It was invented by Larry Wall.

In general, Perl is easier to learn and faster to code in than the more structured C and C++ languages. Perl programs can, however, be quite sophisticated. Perl tends to have devoted adherents. Perl was originally said to stand for "Practical Extraction and Reporting Language" but that name is no longer used. Larry Wall prefers the usage of an upper-case "Perl" for the language itself and lower-case "perl" for any interpreter or compiler of Perl.

The most common use of Perl is for CGI scripting. Visit www.perl.com for more information.
</answer>

    <answer>
'htdocs' is the directory that all of your web files need to be uploaded to on our NT hosting plans. It is best to set it as the initial directory you connect to when you FTP to your hosting. This option is usually referred to as initial host or remote directory or folder within most FTP software.
</answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
All Internet hosts, including your computer when it is connected to the Internet, use a DNS server. Every time you go to a website, you need to look up the site's IP address using the domain name of the website. Your request for this lookup is eventually passed to a DNS server somewhere.

But your request is one of thousands, even millions of requests being made at any one time across the Internet. The DNS lookup process requires that if your local DNS server is not Authoritative for the domain that contains the domain name you are trying to reach, it should ask other servers to get an answer. Your local server could get quite busy performing these lookup requests, and this could slow down its performance if it is Authoritative for a domain name.

To combat this the answers that a DNS server gets from another DNS server can be added to their own internal database and retained for a period of time equal to the time to live (ttl) value set on the record stored on the Authoritative DNS server.

Storing these responses is called caching, and allows a DNS server to respond more quickly to multiple queries for the same domain or host. If you are on a website, and want to retrieve the next page on the site, the local DNS server does not have to look up the host again, provided the time to live (ttl) value has not expired and caused the local DNS server to delete the information. This is why it takes so long to contact a website at first, but subsequent requests for pages on the same site are somewhat faster.

Caching DNS servers are configured for recursive lookup as well. This creates a server that will respond to lookup requests by delivering answers from its cache, or looking them up on other servers. It is the job of a caching DNS server to handle general lookups of Internet domains. A caching DNS server reduces the load placed on an Authoritative DNS server by handling the requests that don not pertain to the local domain.

Almost all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operate some kind of caching DNS server.

Unfortunately DNS caching is a double-edged sword. It speeds up resolution by storing recent answers, and short-circuiting the normal resolution process. However there is a down side. Because DNS servers cache answers, and don't delete these answers until the time to live (ttl) expires, it can take hours or days for the entire Internet to recognize changes to DNS information for your domain name.
</answer>

  <faq>
    <answer>
Domain Name Service (DNS) is a very complex subject and we would not be able to adequately cover every aspect in a FAQ, below is a simplified outline.

A DNS server provides 'name resolution service' which means that DNS servers resolve names into IP addresses. Every computer on the Internet has a unique IP address (a series of four numbers separated by dots). A DNS server is used to 'resolve' a name into an IP address (or vice versa). This protocol is necessary because humans can remember names easier than they can numbers.

A DNS server is usually located on the network to which you are attached. If you are using an Internet Service Provider (ISP), your DNS server is at your ISP. If you are using the network at your college or your office, you probably have a local DNS server somewhere near you.

When you type 'http://www.lcn.com' into your web browser, your browser software sends that domain name to your local DNS server. Whenever your local DNS server runs into a domain name it doesn't recognize (something it hasn't looked up yet), it goes to the root DNS servers to look it up. The root DNS server will respond with a list of DNS servers who are in charge of resolving the domain name. Whenever a machine is responsible for a domain name, it's referred to as the 'Authoritative' server because it is the authority on that domain name. Your local DNS server then sends another query to those 'Authoritative' DNS servers, and usually gets an answer telling it what server holds the information you require.
</answer>
