Description

Enthusiastic and motivated Systems Administrator required to join a successful hosting and internet services company. This is an opportunity to join a small, focused team maintaining and enhancing our core business systems and the environment in which they run.

This varied role primarily requires strong Linux and *BSD skills along with some Windows, networking, security and programming ability. You will have the opportunity to develop new skills in a number of technology areas, as well as being able to build on your existing strengths and knowledge.

Main responsibilities
  • Deploying and supporting core business systems in both live and test environments.
  • Maintaining the network and datacentre environment in which to host live services.
  • Designing, implementing and maintaining core systems architecture services, such as DNS, email, web servers, backups, etc.
  • Diagnosing technical faults within the live environment and resolving issues or notifying the appropriate department as appropriate.
  • Working with the Customer Support team to investigate customer queries.
  • Providing expert technical advice to the rest of the company, in particular to the Projects team.
  • Implementing general IT solutions as required by the company.
Qualifications
  • Strong Linux/UNIX/BSD/Windows systems administration skills.
  • Good TCP/IP networking knowledge.
  • A good understanding of key internet protocols, in particular DNS, SMTP, HTTP.
  • Ability to understand and write shell and Perl scripts.
  • Experience setting up and maintaining PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar RDBMS.
  • Experience of Apache, Exim, Bind (or similar).
  • Ability to learn how existing systems operate, and to diagnose and fix bugs in them.
  • Be enthusiastic about learning new technologies and building great solutions.
  • Be self motivated, organised and dependable.
Other
  • Experience of configuring CISCO switches (IOS) would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of domain registration would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of SNMP, Nagios or similar monitoring technologies.
  • Experience with backup systems would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Ruby would be advantageous.
