Recent domain name news from the last week:
Number Of Domain Names Registered Approaching 200 Million
Verisign has revealed that around 11 million domain names were registered during the last quarter of 2009 pushing the total number of domain name registrations to 192 million, 25 years after dotcom domain names were released.
The details were published as part of the Domain Name Industry Brief that the internet infrastructure service provider publishes every quarter. Globally, dotcom and dotnet domain names are still the most popular accounting for more than half of the total number of domain names registered worldwide. Read full article here
One and Two Character .Info Domain Names on the Way
.Info registry Afilias is asking ICANN to approve a plan to offer one and two character .info domain names for registration. As with other newer gTLDs, ICANN originally reserved all one and two character domains from being registered. Afilias is modeling its plan after Neustar’s launch of one and two character .biz domain names. Read full article here
How Baidu Got Hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army
Last month visitors to Baidu.com were redirected to a page stating that the site had been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army. Baidu later sued Register.com for allegedly allowing a security intrusion that enabled the hackers to change the name servers for Baidu.com. But the original lawsuit redacted the essential facts about how the hackers got control of Baidu’s account at Register.com. Now an unredacted copy of the lawsuit is available. Read full article here
