Domain Names – The benefits of multi-year registrations

Computer screen

This article will explain the benefits and importance of registering your domain names for multiple years.

.uk and .eu domains are excluded from this as they can only be registered for 2 years and 1 year respectively as per Nominet and Eurid specifications.

Any top level domains can be registered for up to 10 years.

One of the main benefits of registering your domain name for a longer period means you don’t need to login every year to renew it and it also decreases the chances of the domain name expiring accidentally.

A rather high profile example of this happened in 2003 when Hotmail forgot to renew their hotmail.co.uk domain name leaving hundreds of thousands of customers without email. The domain was available for sale again on the open market and somebody else was able to register it as a result.

Don’t let this happen to you – it can potentially be very damaging to yourself/business. Customers emails bounceback and your website has disappeared. Read on for tips on keeping your domain registration safe.

  1. Make sure you make a note of the expiry date.

  2. Regularly log into your account and keep your registration details up to date so that we can contact you.

  3. Register your domain for the maximum time period – this ensures it is yours for that period and it will take longer to expire

  4. Switch on auto renewal – payment is automatically taken from a registered card so you don’t even need to login to make payment.

Other advantages of longer registrations include:

  • Multi-year discounts – the longer you register for the more you save – Our fee structure can be found at the following link:

  • No hidden fees what you see is what you pay

  • Longer time period before your domain name expires, so less chance of having to pay redemption charges to renew the domain
