Welcome to the LCNews

Dear %%%FNAME%%%.

Welcome to the September issue, during August we moved offices but our service remains unchanged. We still offer competitive advantages as one of the most competitively priced domain name registrars around and we will continue to do so for a long time. New premises will enable us to expand our resources and the services offered to you so watch this space. Our design team have been busy and you can now view the results for yourself in Coffee table viewing. September means back to school for thousands of children across the UK. The roads will return to their normal clogged selves but the high streets will be clear at lunchtime. Look back at September’s gone by in our Back to school for a history lesson section.

I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter and if you have any comments or suggestions please email feedback@lcn.com.

Many thanks

All other contact details remain the same including the phone and fax numbers.

Our new offices will allow us to grow and expand our resources and service further. We aim to continually improve our services to ensure we offer the best facility around at the most competitive price. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help you.

Email Forwarding

Improved Email Forwarding

At LCN we are constantly looking at ways to improve the service we offer to our customers. The latest imporvement to the LCN admin section after customer consultation and feedback is the addition of multiple email forwarders.

The email forwarding service now provides you with up to 5 different email forwarding aliases each of which can be forwarded to a different email address and one that can act as a catchall forwarder. The catchall forwarder will re-direct all the emails sent to anything@yourdomain.com, that do not match any of the other forwarding aliases you may have set-up.

Email identification

The LCN support team offer help and support via email and phone. If you prefer to email asking for help and/or support we will aim to respond to you within 24 hours.

When emailing please ensure you identify yourself clearly. It is a good idea to include your order number and domain name so our customer support team know who they are talking to. This will speed up the service provided.

If our support team have to investigate to find out who's requesting help or reply to your original mail for further information then this delays us answering your queries and resolving your problems.

If for example you send your request from a different email address maybe work or a hotmail account it is very difficult to trace the customer details if you don't identify who you are. Also when returning responses please clearly identify yourself and include all of the previous correspondence otherwise the problem represents itself.

Our support desk respond to hundreds of emails a day. Cryptic emails or vague replies cost both us and you time in solving your problems. Your co-operation is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Nominet UK warns of new Internet invoicing scam

5 August 2004

Following concerns expressed by many of our customers, Nominet UK, the .uk Internet registry, is alerting registrants (domain name holders) to be aware of bogus invoices being distributed by an organisation called "Domain Registry Services."

Registrants have been receiving a 'Notice of Expiration' invoice from Domain Registry Services, which infers that it is the Registry for those domain names.  The notice states that the registrant stands to lose their domain name unless the invoice is settled. The sums being demanded are many times what Nominet would charge a registration agent  (seller of domain names) for registering a .uk domain name.

These false invoices have been issued to owners of  .com and .org domain names in the past, but Nominet UK has recently received information that this scam has spread to .co.uk names as well.

Nominet UK advise all .uk domain holders to be careful when checking correspondence regarding the expiry of their domain names. If you have any doubts about the validity of an invoice, please contact us and we will be able to advise you.

Nominet UK is also investigating where this organisation has obtained its lists of .uk information, and is co-operating with trading standards officers to deal with this matter.

WHY BUY?

Do I Need A Dedicated Server The decision on when to upgrade to having your own dedicated web server all depends on your budget along with the type of site you have.

Dedicated Servers can be expensive for some pockets, but if you are running a business oriented site which receives high volumes of traffic it may be time for you to make the switch from shared hosting to dedicated hosting. Some factors to consider are below:

Bandwidth This is a key factor contributing to the decision of upgrading to a server. If your site is receiving high amounts of traffic daily, then a web server's resources and bandwidth will be a major plus. During busy periods this will ensure that you have adequate bandwidth. You will not be sharing the bandwidth with 100's of other sites as you would be with a standard hosting plan.

Your own space With shared hosting you may have a choice of plans which have a 'capped' amount of space. With a dedicated server you can have all the space and more available to host your site or any other sites you are planning on developing in the near future. This is important if you are planning on developing an entire network of sites or introduce a hosting service yourself.

Software Installation Software is unlimited for dedicated server customers. You'll be able to handle the security updates, or upgrades as you have total access to manage the server.

The Future A dedicated server is ideal if you are building a network of sites. You can continue to add your network of sites without having to contact the host and order new hosting plans. You could host paid for sites if you wish to earn back some of the investment you pay monthly for leasing the server. You could even open your own web hosting business reselling the space on your server as hosting accounts.

Cost You have full access to the server to add as many websites as you wish and add whatever software you require, along with full root access. The price can be split between customers. You can fit over 500 sites on a dedicated server. If you charged customers at £50 per time for 30mb of space you would have paid for your server with 20 customers* and have room for 100's of other customers plus plenty of space left for your requirements.
