Windows VPS's Coming Soon!

[top]

Serverchoice are due to launch their new Virtual Private Servers (VPS's) with Windows operating system on Monday 11th February 2008.

You will be able to choose either a Windows or Linux based operating system. Windows provides a familiar environment for many users and Linux allows for complete control over the server and it's applications.

3 Months FREE!

If you have been thinking about upgrading from your shared hosting platform or are looking to develop applications that require more customisation, then why not take advantage of their 3 Months Free on all VPS products which will also including the New Windows operating system VPS's when they launch. They are confident that you will like the VPS product offering with its point and click simplicity, the ability to host multiple web sites, the freedom to install what you want and much more, all for a low monthly cost. The free trial will allow you to gauge for yourself the advantages of running your own virtual server with absolutely no obligation, plus the added benefit that if you like it you've just got 3 months free.

What is a VPS?

By using virtualisation technology, several Virtual Private Servers (VPS) can be installed onto one piece of hardware that shares system resources such as the CPU and memory. Each VPS looks and behaves almost exactly like a full dedicated server. The big differences from shared hosting are:

  • VPS are isolated from one another by fully partitioning the file system so that they are not affected by the activities of other accounts on the server, meaning up-time is more consistent.
  • Root access to the server provides the freedom and flexibility to start, stop and reboot the VPS whenever you want. Install your own software and customised scripts and configure applications with point-and-click simplicity.

A VPS gives you the features and functionality of a full dedicated server without the associated costs. If you need to host unlimited domains, have complete control of your environment and run your own applications, then you will benefit from having a VPS.

LCN Are Here To Help

[top]

If you need help setting up your hosting accounts, email accounts or anything else maybe our online support page can help you. Step by step guides are available from uploading files to setting up emails for your domain name. We also have a large FAQ’s section, so if you need an answer to a question why not try our frequently asked questions first, if that still doesn't answer your query our highly trained Customer Support Staff are happy to help you on 0870 744 0823.

To give you an idea of the kind of FAQ's we have, here are the 3 most frequently asked questions:

What exactly is Web hosting?

Web hosting is an allocated amount of disk space for your domain name on a computer that serves the information stored on it to the internet. It is where all the files that make up your web site can be found. Hosting removes the need to provide and maintain expensive and complicated Servers. Having your website hosted offers many benefits over freespace offered by Internet Service Providers:

  • It gives you disk space on our Servers which you can use to upload your site to.
  • Support for more advanced features such as CGI,Perl etc.
  • You can use your domain name as your web address instead of the long and often hard to remember ISP/freespace one
  • You can use your domain to send & receive emails
  • You are not sharing the Servers resources with 1000's of other users
  • Eliminates the need for redirection altogether.

How do I set up my free web and email forwarding ?

The re-direction can be set-up from the admin section on our website.

  • Go to the admin section of the LCN website.
  • Enter the username and password you chose when you purchased the domain name.
  • You will be presented with a list of all the domains you have purchased with LCN. Next to each domain name will be a drop down menu choose Set up forwarding.
  • In the first field Web Forwarding enter the address you want all web requests forwarded to. In the second field Email Forwarding enter the address you want all email messages forwarded to.
  • Click Submit

How can I check who has been visiting my website?

Our UN hosting plans allow you to view web based statistics. To Access these web stats simply go to your domain name and add /stats at the end, for example: www.yourdomain.com/stats and login with your hosting username and password. Once logged in you will be able to get a break down of who has been visiting your site.

If you are on one of our old NT hosting plans unfortunately you do not have a web based stats facility. You can however download the weekly raw log files by using FTP to connect to the Server and navigating to the logs directory. These files are not really readable so you would require some software to analyse them for you.

At LCN we have a range of market leading web hosting plans packed full of features and facilities to allow your site to run smoothly. Take a look at our hosting plans to decide which plan is most suited to your needs. If you are unsure which plan will be most suitable for you, then please don't hesitate to contact us on 0870 744 0823 or by email using our contact us form.

Website Workshop - Final Step

[top]

Last month we covered Step 5 which involved organising our website folder and writing the HTML for your website. This month it is the final step.

Step 6 - Completing your Website

In the 6th and final part of our webdesign workshop we will be styling our website via the use of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

To make it easier for you we have put the step by step guide into a PDF document which you can either work from online or download and print.

The PDF can be found here - Website Workshop Step 6 we have also created a zip file containing all our images and stylesheets which is available for download here.

If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader you can download it here. Or visit http://www.adobe.com

If you have missed any parts of this Workshop click here for all previous steps.

Website Workshop Feedback

We have received some great feedback over the last 6 months but we would like to know what everyone generally thought of the Workshop. For example did you find it useful, was the workshop easy to follow and understand, and would you be interested in future workshops? Depending on the feedback we receive we are thinking of running shorter workshops in the future such as flash animations, CSS and artistic effects for your websites.

So, let us know what you thought by emailing feedback@lcn.com

Saint Valentine's

[top]

St Valentine's Day is a holiday dedicated to lovers. It probably derives from the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalis (February 15th).

Originally a festival for shepherds, it was celebrated in honour of Faunus (in Roman mythology, the grandson of the god Saturn). Its primary purpose was to secure fertility for the fields, the flocks, and the shepherds themselves. The festival gradually became associated with the feast day (February 14th) of two Roman martyrs, both named St Valentine, who lived in the 3rd century, but about whom nothing specific is known.

St Valentine has traditionally been regarded as the patron saint of lovers. An early reference is found in the works of Chaucer (one of the greatest English poets, whose masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, was one of the most important influences on the development of English literature), who states that birds pair on St Valentine’s Day.

The practice of calling oneself a “Valentine” and asking one’s beloved to be the same, is referred to in the Paston Letters, the largest surviving collection of 15th-century English correspondence written by the Paston family and their neighbours in Norfolk.

Avatar Yourself!

[top]

What is an Avatar?

An avatar is a computer user's representation of himself or herself, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model or a two-dimensional icon/picture used on Internet forums and other communities such as Facebook and Myspace.

Avatar's are great if like me you don't want to use a real image of yourself on every forum or social networking website. You can create a 3D version of yourself or your alter ego very quickly using Avatar creating websites.

There are a few Avatar creating websites out there, some being better than others. We set ourselves the task of finding out which one is the best and reviewing the runner ups.

www.meez.com

Meez.com is an excellent Avatar creating website and I am personally hooked. It is easy to use if a little long winded. Deciding which hairstyle to pick or which background theme takes your fancy the most takes quite some time due to the large volume to choose from. But the large content has its plus sides too, as you can get the best possible likeness of yourself over other Avatar creating websites.

How it works

Basically you start with a naked picture of your avatar, then working through the onscreen steps you can change the appearance by selecting options like skin tone, body type, eye colour and adding hairstyles. Then comes the dressing up part. You can dress up your avatar with different outfits and accessories. Meez gives you millions of potential combinations, so you can create a look that shows off your unique style. The most fun option of all is the animations section, here you can add fun animations to your 3D self like dancing, boxing and many more.

Once you have finished creating your Meez, it's time to show your 3D self to the rest of the world. You can use it on Myspace, Facebook, Blogger, and on any site or program that accepts digital images.

This site has to be the best Avatar creating website around at the moment. The only disadvantages are that it can sometimes run very slow due to the large amount of content. You also have to pay for some of the items using Meez coinzs, but these can be earned quite easily or purchased for a very low amount of money. Overall this website is fun, easy to use and we give it a rating of: 9/10

http://uk.avatars.yahoo.com

Yahoo have come in second place. The basic principals are the same though, adding facial features, clothing and backgrounds. But the choices are a lot less fun. The site is very easy to use and loads a lot quicker than Meez. Another good feature is that all the clothing and accessories available are free. You can also save your image and download for use on other websites. You can also use it in Yahoo Messenger, with easy step by step how to guides provided onscreen. Overall this is a great avatar creating website, but the lifeless feel of the avatar you is a bit disappointing. If Yahoo increased there content and gave the avatars a bit of life i think this site would be a definite competitor for Meez, but sadly until this happens we give it a rating of: 7/10

www.stardoll.com

Stardoll is a bit different to the other avatar creating websites reviewed in this newsletter. Most of their members are girls between the ages of 7 and 17. You can choose from their collection of celebrity dolls and dress them up in a wide selection of fashions. Every celebrity doll has a wardrobe full of unique clothes and new dolls are released every week.

This site is a lot of fun even if you are not aged between 7 and 17. You can use a celebrity doll or create your own, then you can add designer clothing, highlights to your hair and much more. The other great feature is the real life shopping experience. You can try on items of clothing by dragging it across onto the doll and if you do not like it drag it back to the wardrobe. Once you have made a choice you can add them to your shopping bag, but sadly you have to pay to purchase them. The down sides to this site is that it is extremely hard to navigate and very quickly becomes irritating, and having to pay for items of clothing. Other than that overall a nice safe environment for young girls and boys to chat in the community section. We give Stardoll a rating of: 6/10

www.weeworld.com

I feel Weeworld is aimed more at children hence why the avatars are cute, colourful and cartoon like. The site is very easy to use and is an enjoyable experience. You can have fun making yourself look as silly as possible. Weeworld does not offer any animations but does have a large content of hairstyles, clothes etc. Exporting your final avatar self is very simple too, again the online instructions talk you through it step by step. It is a great website for kids due to the simple style and step by step instructions. We give this site a rating of: 6/10

www.doppelme.com

Doppelme is again a website that i feel is aimed more at children. The cartoon quality is not as good as Weeworld but you do get some very funny accessories. Creating your avatar is very simple, there is no animation available, but you can change facial expression, hair, clothes and also add accessories. After creating your avatar you are requested to register to get your cartoon doppelme, once you have registered you are provided with an option to have a full body or just a head shot along with the codes to add this avatar to websites. A nice little extra is The Mall. Here you can purchase different items and accessories using DoppelMe Coins. As you purchase items from the Mall, new items are unlocked. It is easy to gain coins simply by referring friends, colleagues, or just by being a loyal DoppelMe member. We rate Doppelme: 5/10

Good-Tutorials.com is a great tutorial site which allows users to upload their own tutorials for others to use. They have CSS, Flash, HTML, PHP, some excellent Photoshop tutorials and much more. Users can vote on ones they like and don't like. It is a great place to find just the effect you are looking for.

www.pdfonline.com

PDFOnline.com is great site for people who want to convert documents to PDF. PDFOnline converts many different formats into PDF, such as Word (DOC), Excel (XLS) and many more. It is simply and easy to use. All you need to do is upload the document and provide an email address for the PDF to be sent to. Simple as that!

www.idodogtricks.com

I came across this cute site in a magazine i was reading a while ago and thought LCNews readers might enjoy it. This very cute and well trained doggie responds to your commands, well most of them as he can get a bit confused if you don't speak doggie language such as sit, fetch, roll over etc, and 10 out of 10 for ahh factor for the command kisses. Enjoy!
